Any advice on purchasing first ice skates for my 5 year old daughter? Brands, types of skates, fits?
I want to start with her this year I will need a pair too!
Without question the most important thing is to get her fitted by a professional.
They wont try to take you for all you are worth because they want you to come back to them but they know what she needs and what her foot needs — so also find someone with experience.
I would also like to point out — as a mom — that you might consider getting her a cheaper brand or a used pair of skates for a while. At five you don’t know if she is even going to want to continue beyond this year and she will be out growing them so fast…
The path that most people take is rentals until the kids shows that they are going to continue for a while and then cheaper or used skates for about a year and then move on to more expensive skates that are fitted for her.
However, if you are a skater and your family are all skaters they it couldn’t her to give her the best foot forward, so to speak, from the very beginning.
Good luck and know that if it doesn’t work out for her you still have time as she is still quite young.
